Marjoram is related to oregano and dittany but it has its own special characteristics and is better known today more as an aromatic herb than a medicinal plant. However, this plant has been used for medicinal purposes for a very long time. Hippocrates included marjoram in the many medical treatises he wrote and it was cultivated in the Roman Empire.

It was believed in ancient times that marjoram can be used as a good luck talisman for happiness, love, and fertility. Supporting this belief, the essential oil of this herb does indeed calm nerves and provides a quick emotional boost.

It is used topically to treat sprains and bruises. It also helps with stress-related insomnia. Marjoram has been found in studies to provide health advantages for persons suffering from hormone imbalances, diabetes, ulcers, and digestive issues. Also useful for headaches, stomachaches, and abdominal pains, as well as antibacterial, calming, and tonic properties.

Marjoram really shines in the kitchen. Dried, the herb holds that lovely fragrance and its flavor is delicate, sweet, floral, and round. Marjoram combines well with other seasonings and will enhance so many different dishes.
